Don’t Deny Your Age – Define It!
Oct 11, 2024Hey, let's have a little chat. Just between you and me. I’ve been thinking a lot about this idea of "ageing gracefully." Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But really……how many of us actually feel like we’re ageing “gracefully”? Or even want to? The media is constantly pushing this narrative that to age is to somehow lose value, especially if you’re a woman. But I’m here to tell you something a bit different today: Don’t deny your age—embrace it!
Let’s talk about a trend that’s been popping up all over my social media feeds lately. It’s called "Conscious Ageing," and honestly, it’s a game-changer. I know, I know. It sounds a bit like a wellness retreat buzzword but stick with me here. Conscious ageing is all about changing our perspective on what it means to grow older. Instead of focusing on the grey hairs, laugh lines (I like to call them smile lines), and the “gravity” problem, conscious ageing is about embracing the process. And it’s not just about the outside—it's about what’s happening inside, too.
Now, before we go further, let’s address the elephant in the room. I’m talking about the myth that black skin doesn’t age. You’ve heard it, right? “Black don’t crack.” It’s practically gospel at this point. But guess what? It’s not entirely true. Sure, darker skin might show ageing differently, and we might not wrinkle as early as some of our lighter-skinned friends, but that doesn’t mean our skin is immune to the passage of time. Ageing isn’t just about wrinkles; it's about how our skin reacts to everything - from sun exposure to diet, to how well we’re taking care of ourselves.
So, what is this whole “Conscious Ageing” thing? Well, it’s like giving yourself permission to not just grow older but to grow better. It’s about focusing on holistic well-being, rather than just slathering on anti-wrinkle cream and praying for a miracle. It’s a shift in mindset—from fearing the ageing process to embracing it, taking care of ourselves from the inside out. Think about it: What am I feeding my skin? How am I protecting it? Am I being kind to myself?
For those of us with darker skin, this approach is particularly powerful. We know our skin has unique needs. Did you know, for example, that black skin tends to lose moisture more quickly, which means hydration is key? Or that certain skin conditions, like hyperpigmentation, are more common as we age? Conscious ageing isn’t just about slapping on sunscreen (although, please, for the love of all that’s good, wear your sunscreen!). It’s about a broader awareness of what our skin—and our whole selves—need at every stage of life.
Let’s flip the script on the negative narratives around ageing. I mean, who decided that getting older is a bad thing, anyway? Personally, I think getting older is pretty fantabulous. Think about it—more life experience, more confidence, more fabulous stories to tell. And yes, maybe a few more grey hairs, but hey, I’ve earned every single one of those, thank you very much!
So, how do we embrace this conscious ageing trend? It starts with the language we use. Let’s ditch the “anti-ageing” and instead talk about “pro-ageing.” Let’s celebrate the wisdom, the stories, the resilience that comes with age. Let’s focus on nourishing our bodies and our minds, on taking time for self-care that goes beyond the surface. It’s about saying yes to that face mask, but also saying yes to meditation, to journaling, to whatever makes you feel vibrant and alive.
The truth is —ageing isn’t a battle to be fought; it’s a journey to be celebrated. And I don’t know about you, but I’m all for enjoying the ride. So, let’s raise a glass (of water, because hydration!) to conscious ageing. To embracing every laugh line, every story, every single year that has shaped us into who we are today. And if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, just smile. Because that’s another line that’s worth celebrating.
In the end, conscious ageing is about embracing every part of ourselves—inside and out. It's about living with intention and joy, focusing on what makes us feel good, and celebrating every stage of life. So, here's to ageing boldly, consciously, and beautifully. After all, we’re not getting older, we’re just getting better!
Cheers to that, ladies (Guinness Punch, water or maybe green juice—your call!)
