Finding Balance: Stress Management Techniques for Mature Women

finding balance in midlife mental health and aging self-care techniques stress management for mature women wellness tips for women Nov 01, 2024

Stress is a big slayer of our health and wellbeing. While society might tell us to slow down, our lives don’t always get the memo. And that’s where balance comes in. Balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly. I always remember my late mother Caroline telling me over and over again….. “Diahanne, you better manage your stress, before it manages you.”

You know that feeling when you’re in your fifties or sixties, thinking life would be all relaxing weekends and potting around in the garden. Instead, you’re juggling family, work, and everything in between. Suddenly, your “me time” looks like that last Ferrero Rocher on the plate—tempting but hard to come by!

Let me tell you, you’re not alone. In fact, more and more mature women are realising that stress doesn’t magically disappear with age. If anything, life gets busier. But here's the good news—we're older, wiser, and so much better equipped to manage it. Here I want to talk about finding balance and stress management, because ladies we’ve earned the right to a little peace from life’s demands that haven’t exactly slowed down. Some of us are still working, some are caring for grandkids or parents, others are managing health issues, and don’t get me started on the joys of technology (who knew Zoom could be so stressful?).

So how do we find balance when stress is lurking around every corner? Let me share a few stress-busting techniques that have worked wonders for me—and for other women like us.

  1. The Power of No

Let’s be real—how many times have you said yes when you really wanted to say no? Whether it’s an extra task at work or hosting the family dinner again, it’s time to reclaim that little two-letter word: No. It’s not selfish; it’s essential. Remember people will respect you more for setting boundaries (they’ll just have to get over it!).

  1. Breathe… No, Seriously

We’ve all been told to “just breathe,” but how many of us actually do it properly? Deep, mindful breathing is one of the easiest and quickest ways to calm the nervous system. Try this: the next time you feel overwhelmed, take a slow breath in for four seconds, hold for four, and breathe out for six. Repeat a few times and feel the tension melt away.

  1. Move That Body

I know what you’re thinking—who has time for a workout? But exercise doesn’t have to be 4 hours at the gym - daily. A short walk, some stretching, or a dance session in the kitchen can do wonders for your mood. Research shows that even 10 minutes of movement can reduce stress hormones. So put on your favourite tunes, turn up the volume and shake off that stress!

  1. Digital Detox

Yes, I’m going there. In this hyper-connected world, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is unplug. I don’t mean going off-grid (unless that’s your thing), but how about setting aside an hour each evening to switch off the screens? Too much screen time can increase stress and anxiety. So, give yourself permission to take a break and connect with something more soothing—like a good book, or even better, yourself. Whether it’s a hot bath, a hobby, or simply sitting in silence, giving yourself permission to recharge is crucial.

Finding balance isn’t a one-off. It’s a daily practice. Some days you’ll nail it; other days, life might throw you a curveball (or three). But what’s important is that you keep coming back to what matters: you. After all, you’ve been looking after everyone else for years—now it’s time to look after yourself, guilt-free!

So, the next time you’re tempted to put everyone else first, remember this: a balanced, stress-free you is a happier, healthier you. You’ve got this!
