Sisterhood and Strength: Building a Support Network for Women 50+

aging gracefully empowerment & growth lifestyle & inspiration selfcare Oct 25, 2024

Is it just me or have you noticed more and more social media posts, digital ads are from 20-somethings sharing their “life hacks” and #girlboss moments. It’s all avocado toast, yoga poses, and “manifesting” the perfect partner. That’s all well and good, but what about us fabulous women who’ve been there, done that, and got the wrinkles to prove it? I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like shouting, “Hey, we’re still here! And we’ve got a lot to say!”

There’s this misconception floating around that once you hit 50, you’re supposed to quietly fade into the background, gracefully retreating from life’s main stage. But let’s set the record straight: We’re not going anywhere. In fact, we’re just getting started! And the best way to navigate this next chapter? By leaning into the power of sisterhood.

Yes, I said it—sisterhood. It’s not just a mantra; it’s a lifeline. You see, there’s something magical that happens when women come together, especially those of us in the 50+ club. We’ve got the experience, the stories, and yes, the wisdom that comes from a life well-lived. But more importantly, we have each other. And that, is where the real strength lies.

I’ve been noticing a trend lately, and it’s one I’m absolutely loving: women over 50 are creating their own networks, both online and offline. From book clubs to travel groups, fitness communities to entrepreneurial circles—there’s a growing movement of women who are coming together to support, inspire, and empower one another. And let me say….. it’s about time!

Think about it. We’re the generation that raised families, built careers, fought for equality, and shattered glass ceilings. We’ve seen it all, done it all, and yet, we’re still standing. So why not stand together? Why not create a community that celebrates our achievements, shares our struggles, and lifts each other up?

I know what some of you might be thinking: “I’m too old to make new friends,” or “I’m set in my ways.” But trust me, it’s never too late to find your tribe. And let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the bond between women who just get it—who understand the joys and challenges of this stage of life.

Building a support network is about creating a space where you are comfortable being seen and heard. It’s about finding those people who’ll cheer you on when you’re trying something new, who’ll listen when you need to vent, and who’ll remind you just how fabulous you truly are.

I recently read a study that said women with strong social ties live longer, healthier, and happier lives. And who doesn’t want that? So, let’s make a pact, you and I. Let’s prioritise our friendships. Let’s reach out, connect, and build the support networks we deserve.

So how do we do it? It’s simpler than you think. Start small. Call up an old friend. Join a local club or class. Volunteer for a cause you’re passionate about. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not start your own group? Trust me, there are plenty of women out there who are looking for exactly what you have to offer—a listening ear, a shared laugh, a little bit of solidarity.

And here’s another tip: Don’t be afraid to mix things up. Your support network doesn’t have to be made up solely of people your age. There’s so much we can learn from each other, across generations. Younger women can gain from our experience, and we can be inspired by their energy and fresh perspectives. It’s a win-win!

Remember, it’s not about how many friends you have, but the quality of those connections. It’s about building a network of women who uplift each other, who are there for the highs and the lows, and who remind each other that life is far from over at 50. In fact, it’s just getting good.

So, to all my 50+ sisters out there: Let’s embrace this stage of life together. Let’s build our support networks with intention and love. Let’s celebrate our stories, our strength, and our sisterhood. Because when women support each other, incredible things happen. And I, for one, am excited to see what’s next for all of us.

Let’s do this together, one fabulous step at a time!  And remember—age is just a number, but friendship? That’s timeless.
