Using our Age as a Superpower

aging gracefully embracing life’s fun side joyful living over 50 laughter as medicine Nov 22, 2024

Let’s face it—getting older does come with its perks. You’ve got wisdom, resilience, and stories that could rival a Netflix series! But here's a question for you: When was the last time you laughed out loud? I’m not talking about a polite chuckle or a little giggle—I mean a full-on, belly-aching, eyes-watering laugh. If you can’t remember, don’t worry. It happens to the best of us! But let me tell you, laughter is one of those secret superpowers we often forget about as we age. Why? Because somewhere along the line, life gets a bit… well, serious. Between family responsibilities, work (or figuring out retirement!), and the general “what’s the world coming to?” conversations, it’s easy to get bogged down.

What do you think ladies are we taking life too seriously? I hope not! But let’s be honest: the world isn’t exactly a happy-go-lucky place right now. There’s always some doom and gloom waiting in the news to mess with our vibes. And while being aware is important, letting that negativity seep in isn’t doing our health—or our laugh lines—any favours. As we age, we start to believe we need to be serious and put together all the time. As if we’ve got to tick all those annoying boxes and hold it all together. So, so exhausting! Using age as a superpower means embracing joy and connection—the very things that make life rich and fun.

There’s a reason why people say laughter is the best medicine. It’s like a natural high—endorphins flowing, stress melting away, and you suddenly feel lighter. Studies have shown that laughter can improve your immune system, reduce pain, and even keep your heart healthy. Now, if that’s not a superpower, I don’t know what is! I’m not talking about forced laughter either—no fake giggles here! I mean genuine, can’t-breathe, “I-need-a-minute-to-compose-myself” laughter. The kind you share with friends, family, or even that random stranger you exchanged a knowing look within the supermarket.

Connection is the key. The older we get, the more we crave it. And that’s not just about socialising. It’s about feeling seen, heard, and understood. It’s about having people in your life who bring out the joy in you, who lift you, and who can laugh with you about the foolishness of it all. I’ve found that the most fabulous women over 50 are those who stay connected with their loved ones, their communities, and their passions. They don’t shrink away—they step up, stay curious, and dive into new experiences. Age isn’t something to “survive”—it’s something to celebrate and embrace, laugh lines and all.

Here’s Some Tips to Use Age as Your Superpower

Stay Curious: Ever noticed how kids find joy in the smallest things? Tap into that! You’re never too old to learn something new or find a new hobby that makes you dizzy with excitement.

Nurture Relationships: Make time for people who make you laugh until you cry. And don’t be afraid to let go of those who bring negativity into your life—no time for that!

Laugh at Yourself: The older I get, the more I realise it’s okay to mess up and laugh about it. Raise your hands if you’ve ever put your knickers on inside out. I have. Laugh it off. Did you get your words all mixed up? Been there too. Hey, it’s part of the fun!

Keep Moving: Physical activity is like laughter for the body. Whether it’s yoga, walking, or dancing around your kitchen—find what makes you feel alive and keep at it.

So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by the seriousness of it all, pause. Take a deep breath and remind yourself: You’ve earned the right to laugh, to be silly, and to embrace joy without guilt. Using age as a superpower means recognising that you’ve got experience on your side—and a heck of a lot of life left to live. In a world that can feel heavy, don’t be afraid to lighten the load with a bit of humour, a touch of grace, and plenty of connection. Because at the end of the day, the best way to use age as your superpower is to live with a heart full of laughter and a spirit that’s connected.

Here’s to laughing out loud and loving every minute of it! ✨
